Toddler Art Class: Bright on Black

Sometimes the simplest materials yield the most satisfying results!

Art Project: Bright on Black
Supplies:
black construction paper
construction paper crayons

Book:
cover art Friends / Hout, Mies van
(This author has written several titles with this same art style and any of them would work fine.)

 What Kids Do:  scribble

 REALLY scribble

two-handed scribbles (with one crayon or two)

make careful marks

drive their crayons like a car across the table
or wear their art as a hat

Hindsight Tip:  I considered also offering colored chalk or cray-pas as alternatives, but in the end decided to go with the simplest (and least messy, especially if it went in the mouth) option because I already owned a class set of these special crayons. If you don't own them, the others would work just as well.

 Variations to try:
try giving them red crayons on red construction paper or yellow on yellow, etc.

Adult Challenge:  Big hands off the art!
